DOC worker recovering a Northern Royal Albatross chick who had recently fledged from Taiaroa Head. Photo provided by DOC.
Observation details
Juvenile Northern Royal Albatross seen sitting on the sand south-east of the viewing platform, towards the harbour channel. The bird walked a short distance, extended it's wings and flapped a bit, then sat still. The bird's size, bill, wingspan, colouring and behaviour were all indicative of a Royal Albatross. These birds don't usually hang out on the beach, so we contacted the Royal Albatross Centre. They sent DOC to investigate, and DOC confirmed that it was a failed fledged chick from Taiaroa Head. DOC recovered the bird, he was given supplementary food and returned to Taiaroa Head. Photo provided by DOC.
