Observation details
Juvenile on the pond. Second record for this pond. I was scanning the pond and came across a night heron, and was shocked to see that it very gray in color. I ran back to my car to get my scope, and then was able to confirm it was a Yellow-crowned. Compared to Black-crowned, the overall color was very different, being a silvery-gray compared to the brown of a Black-crowned. The bill was very thick and entirely dark. The chin was white. The head was dark and covered in small white spots. The wings were also covered in small white spots. Unfortunately there was no service here, so i drove to pescadero to let people know. Sadly, the bird was no longer present when I got back to the pond about 35 minutes later. However, I think the bird is still very likely in the area, and is likely foraging in the pond during the early morning and late afternoon.
