Observation details
Initially I saw this bird very close, about 50 feet away as it flew up the slope and over the top of the mesa behind me. I saw a long-winged hawk with an owl face. It took me a few minutes to climb up to the top of the mesa and look over the other side. By that time it had flown to the end of Deer Trap Mesa, which I measure as 5000' away. In my binos I could see the white rump patch. I was able to secure some very distant photos which show the definite harrier shape as opposed to other hawks. These are about a mile away, taken with a 300mm lens, and heavily cropped. Mary Brown also had a good look at this bird as she was on top of the mesa when it flew up and over.
