Observation details
Here's a Flickr link to 7 pics of a NOFU seen on 22 May around 1300 hrs. https://flic.kr/s/aHskX6fT6M I am a seabird observer working for Integrated Statistics (IS) of Woods Hole. IS is on contract with the US Gov’t (BOEM) and the sightings that were entered yesterday on eBird were from a pelagic cruise of the NOAA Ship Gordon Gunter from 15 May - 26 May, 2017. We went from Newport RI to Cape Hatteras close to the coast and then back along the inner edge of the Gulf Stream to the sw of George's Bank and then back to Newport RI. Sightings from such cruises aren't usually entered on eBird at all as the data is owned by the US Gov't. I obtained permission from the US agency (BOEM) overseeing this ECOMON cruise to file with eBird the 1st sighting of each species seen each day and I only included those sighted within 300 x 300 metres of the moving ship from one side. This amounts to a relatively small number of eBird records (150 records of 250 individuals) compared to the number of actual records (625 records and 1320 individuals). So, while the records on eBird show a relatively few NOFUs (14), for instance, we (2 seabird observers, Nick Methaney and I) actually saw 47 NOFU over the entire period where we (one/other of us or both) were observing non-stop from sunrise to sunset from 16-25 May.
