Observation details
possible Yellow-bellied based on visual appearance: compact yellowish/olive flycatcher with bright wingbars, longish primaries, short-looking bill, thin, neat complete eyering. Head color blended into only slightly paler throat. Called repeatedly (attached audio), a note that sounds rather Acadian-like. If I'd heard only the call and not seen the bird, I'd have assumed Acadian. If I'd only seen it, I'd have said it was a Yellow-bellied. The new flycatcher guide (Cin-Ty Lee & Andrew Birch 2023) notes that Yellow-bellied 'pip' calls are similar to Acadian Flycatcher, and the sonogram illustration closely resembles that of the attached recording (pg 97, top). Merlin Sound ID labeled it as Acadian, but I've also learned to distrust Merlin with flycatcher calls because I've seen it label the same bird as both Acadian and Least before.
