Ironwood Picnic Area nest #9
Observation details
Observed nest #9 (new) 07:17-08:10. Both male and female observed visiting the cavity several times. Nest about 12’ AGL in an arm of a 28-ft tall saguaro, opening facing 262° and angled somewhat downward. I was able to hear nestlings giving scratchy call notes when I probed with the camera. No adults mobbed me while I was scoping. Could not get an angle for endoscope. Observed nest #6 08:40-08:50. No activity noted. Observed nest #8 09:15-09:40. Nestlings audible from the exterior. Endoscope revealed 3 nestlings, approximately 10-13 days old, and at least a couple of unhatched eggs. The male arrived with a small prey delivery while I was scoping, and he flew around and checked me out, but didn’t vocalize. A few minutes later the female arrived with a large dragonfly. She entered the nest cavity, disappeared, and then exited again, still with the dragonfly. Could it have been too big for the nestlings to eat? Observed nest #1 09:55-10:10. No activity noted. I scoped the nest cavity and found no eggs or nestlings.
