Ironwood Picnic Area nest #8
Observation details
New probable nest site: (32.2001784, -111.1355338) male perched on top of a saguaro at 07:45; when I approached, he took flight and circled around me, low, while calling. I could not identify which cavity might be in use. After a minute or two he left the area. At 08:15 I observed a group of 5-6 martins mobbing a kestrel that perched on top off the sentinel saguaro next to nest #1. After couple of minutes, they drifted northeast, and flew low circles around nest #4; one male landed on top of that cactus for a couple of minutes. Observed nest #6 08:40-08:50 and no activity was noted. Male seen visiting new nest cavity (nest #8) at 09:55. Female observed peering out of the opening about 10 minutes later. Male entered and exited the cavity again at 10:08. 10:15 female arrived with a dragonfly. 10:24 female brought another prey item, possibly a butterfly. Second new probable nest site: (32.1923755, -111.1385422) Male sitting on dead palo verde close to tall saguaros, possibly a sentry perch. Observed nest #1 10:55-11:10. Male came to sit on his sentry perch for a couple of minutes, then disappeared. No prey deliveries observed; possibly still incubating. (My last observations at this nest, with endoscope, were 13 days ago.)
