Observation details
Driving up to see two football teams practicing on the field, I thought chances of this bird still being here were about zero—but there it was. Seemed unfazed by kids running laps around the field and doing drills, though it didn’t seem happy when geese flew over. Most of the time it was actively feeding. Insanely unexpected habitat. Small head, small black eye on plain face, warm buff tones on breast but patterned back more gray and scaly, yellow legs (relatively long), almost mourning dove look to it from a distance when it was walking. Near sunset when we left. Nice bookend to a day that started with sunrise and ash-throated flycatcher. Many photos.
