Media notes
Recorded with an autonomous recording unit strapped to a tree. I was outside at the time but about 100 meters from the recorder, which was closer to the birds than I was.
Observation details
Identified by emphatic flight calls. Heard and recorded. Birds not seen. The calls are typical of type 2s: slightly more than 0.05 seconds in duration, rapidly downward-sweeping in frequency with a distinct "kink" about 1/2 between the maximum and minimum frequency. Very common type 2 call seen and heard often in California. I was able to record only 3 calls but heard more before I got the recorder turned on. The birds appeared to land near the top of eastern white pines, which are loaded with cones.
