Observation details
Flushed while bush hogging (mowing) the pasture. Obvious rail behavior and flight style. Stayed hidden, only flew a short distance before going back to cover. Legs dangling. Short tail and slender wings. Dark over all with pale trailing edge of wings. Too big for black and yellow rail, also lacking white patches on wings. Short bill, pale in color. All signs point to SORA. Field is about waist tall grasses and flowers. Goldenrod, sunflower, ironweed. First spotted when the size of the patch of grass was getting smaller, like an island of tall grass that was yet to be mowed. I stopped the tractor and flushed the bird a couple more times on foot. The only camera I had was my phone. I will look through the videos and freeze frame the best shots.
