Observation details
On my second day encountering this legendary bird, I actually got extremely satisfying, close views. This was thanks to my guide, Kimio Kanda, who took me to a spot he has scouted over many years of work in the forest, where he has found three nesting pairs of rails. Starting at sunrise, at least four different individuals seen over the course of an hour from our hiding spot in the parked car, with at least one adult male (thick bill), one female (thinner bill), and one immature (black-tipped bill). Birds were foraging on a recently-mowed lawn at the edge of the road, often dashing back-and-forth between the lawn and the forest across the road. At one point one bird, and then two, repeatedly and loudly vocalized for several minutes close to the car. An unforgettable experience. (Total count includes additional birds that gave fleeting views shortly afterwards as we drove through the forest roads.)
