Observation details
Initially heard just east of the restroom on the south end of Bennington Lake (46.063543, -118.260682). I immediately started to record calls because they sounded spot-on for rose-breasted. Calls were high pitched and squeaky, sounding like “tennis shoes on a gym floor.” The spectrogram shows calls that are descending/downslurred in pitch which fits rose-breasted. This is in contrast with the ascending pitch of black-headed. The spectrogram also shows smears at the end of the calls which is characteristic of rose-breasted. I don’t believe the smears can be contributed solely to reverberation (i.e., echo bouncing off nearby vegetation) because the recordings were taken from three different locations and the reverberation from eBird recordings of black-headed I see don’t amount to this extensive of smear. I only saw the bird briefly twice for a few seconds and managed only poor photos. The second photo shows fairly dense streaking across the breast, rather than being limited to the sides, which supports rose-breasted. Because the photos are poor, I don’t believe hybridization can be assessed. Some rose-breasted can have darker bills and younger birds can still have orange color so I’m not concerned by these field marks.
