Observation details
Unexpected! Flyover SE around 7:30 AM. Dickcissel’s flight call has always stuck with me even though I’ve only had a flyover bird once in New Jersey. It was described to me as an electric fart. It didn’t click as to what exactly I was hearing at first, but it was one of those “I know that I recognize what I’m hearing but it's buried somewhere in my brain” type of moments. I quickly looked around in the sky and spotted a lone bird flying away from me at a decent height (about as high as I typically see AMROs migrating during the day). Definitely lighter underneath, darker notched looking tail, right size for Dickcissel, but the light was very difficult. It just so happens that I was recording a GRCA imitating/remixing BLJA and WEVI back-to-back. So, fortunately I had a recording running and have audio of 2 Dickcissel flight calls. I think it gave a total of 4 flight calls as it was passing overhead, but 1 was distant and another you can barely hear because I was moving around so much. I didn't get a great look at this bird and if I didn't have a recording that I could go back and listen to, I wouldn’t list it. I don’t have much experience with this bird and it’s possible I’m making a mistake. I will better compare spectograms when I have more time after work today. Feel free to drop me any thoughts on the audio (email in bio). I would love feedback from any reviewers if possible. Thanks!
