Observation details
On the south beach, much of the time loafing a little ways apart from the gulls, except for a first-year Glaucous-wing that approached it sociably. However, first noticed in flight chasing a gull with acrobatic twists and turns, white wing patches flashing. Smaller than the adult California gull it was harassing in flight along the shore. Pale bases and shaft streaking of all primaries made an obvious wing patch. Thin bill. Thin, pointed middle retrices that barely extend. All dark body with tawny tips to many feathers indicate a first year bird. Not in tiptop condition. Photos to follow.
