Observation details
Neither of the birds seen well here had staring white eyes (one had cloudy white eyes and I believe another individual was duskier). In retrospect, perhaps this modest amount of eye color variation isn't particularly noteworthy, but the bird illustrated (page 313) in James Eaton et al.'s "Birds of the Indonesian Archipelago" (Second Edition) has a white eye, although I should note that the adjoining description says "creamy-white eye." In any event, based on our small sample size of birds seen well here on Kangean, it seems that eye color is variable. This would be the jentincki subspecies.
