Observation details
I initially assumed this woodcreeper was a Strong-billed Woodcreeper, even though it was not as large as the ones I have seen here (but still larger than other woodcreeper species). However, I was not able to find any existing recordings of this species vocalizing the way this bird was. Much later I stumbled upon audio of Black-banded Woodcreeper which seems to be a perfect match for how this bird was singing. The species is apparently cited as being present in the highlands of Chiapas, albeit sparsely, by the Cornell Lab's Birds of the World. eBird has only one other record (without documentation) of this species in Mexico, making this a very mysterious and enigmatic species in the region indeed.
