Observation details
First spotted the bird while driving to leave the Ashton Tract; it caught a large insect directly in front of the car, showing a flash of yellow belly before landing close on the telephone wire. Large bill and notched tail indicated Tropical/Couch's Kingbird, though the bird did not vocalize once. Was observed by ~15 birders for well over an hour before we lost track of it. In comparing flight shots of the bird's open wing to Andy McGann's Pyle Guide, we feel that this bird can be identified as an adult male Tropical Kingbird. Tropical Kingbird, because of the length of the primary feathers in comparison to Couch's Kingbird, and adult male due to the tapered shape of the outer primary.
