Observation details
Lifer!!! first time seeing this bird, it was initially on the ground, saw this bird quite far away and thought it was heron but took photo anyway, and immediately recognized it as a lapwing!! when we got closer to flew away but still to nearby empty grassy and shrubby area near the fish ponds, didn't see them foraging, later saw them flying again, reminds me of a pond heron in flight but they have a very different black color to the tip of their wings, and heard their loud piping calls, which I recorded, saw two flying together in a group and making a loop in the sky before flying back down again, later saw another one flying on the edge of a fish pond, flying low over the pond, and later called again which I recorded again. super cool birds, totally unexpected and my first lapwing species!! thought they were mostly a wetland/coastal species but apparently they also occur in agricultural areas with fishponds.
