Observation details
Continuing bird found by Steve Patterson a couple days ago. Viewed with scope from outside the gate on Lebanon Rd. True to what is often stated about this species, the bird spent most of its time in drier territory, picking through the dense grass and vegetation 2-3 feet from the water’s edge and only setting foot in the water once or twice in a 20-minute period. It was seen well in the scope when it moved parallel to the shore in the shorter grass and mud. Moderately small sandpiper—obviously smaller than the nearby Killdeer and Lesser Yellowlegs, but not as small in comparison as would be expected for a Least/Semi/Western. When seen in good side profile, the bird presented a long profile with folded wingtips extending beyond the tail. Grayish-tan upperparts reminded me of the Semipalmated Sandpipers I’ve been seeing lately. Dark bill of moderate length; dark legs (clean and representative from the bird walking through wet grass rather than soft mud). Blurry, buff streaks on breast. Documentation phone-scoped photo is of little value for details but at least conveys the profile of the bird.
