Observation details
This may sound like a tall tale. And it should. Seen first 8/23 in same vicinity of continuing BCHU. So description is a comparison of those 2 nearly identical birds with mostly separate ranges. Pictures tell most of the story and slight details distinguishing RTHU from BCHU include: Smaller and straighter bill. Slightly narrower tips of primaries, with wingtips ending well above split tail. Behavior reminiscent of rufous, protecting space around the feeder. I’ve passed photos onto birders way more skilled and experienced then myself and no objections, and general consensus. Recording on merlin 8/24 ID’d bird as RTHU, which. is. Not definitive -but it’s something.
