Observation details
Went to Simpson Research Station this afternoon in search of the Baird's Sandpiper observed and reported on yesterday by fellow birders Steve Patterson and Neil Owens. After no success scanning the distant bank of the pond from the closed gate on Old Lebanon Road, I was granted permission to drive through the main entrance and go to the pond for about fifteen minutes. Fortunately, I quickly spotted the Baird foraging on the grassy edge of the west side of the pond. This sandpiper was slightly larger than the Least, Semipalmated, and Western sandpipers. It had black legs and feet; a black bill drooping slightly at the end; and scalloped wings of black and buff. Notably, the wings also extended about half an inch longer than the tail.
