Observation details
Two adults in what I suspect is pre-basic molt as indicated by the thinning of the orange wash across the head and neck. Both birds were actively chasing fish fry in the shallows, snatching at them with outstretched bills. This explains the upturn. First reported by Darlene McNeil on 16 Aug 2023 (checklist S147388757) and seen by a number of other birders since. Regular stray to Long Island (esp. Jamaica Bay) in late summer. This is the 5th time I've seen Avocet at Mecox Bay, since 2019. All between the end of July and early September.
