Observation details
At chum spot at 125W 46 55N, first spotted on the water behind the stern of the Monte Carlo, swimming in our direction on its own. As it drew closer, we noted a darkish face and short, stout bill so we pointed the bird out to all of the participants on the trip. We managed to get within 30m of the murre for a few minutes, and had excellent views in great light, with the sun mostly at our backs. Numerous photos taken. In the field, we noted clean white flanks with three dark wispy marks, dark face extending well below eye, almost to lower edge of lower mandible, short stout blackish beak with a dull white tomial line, crown and nape were blackish-gray, best observed when the bird was swimming directly away.
