Observation details
Sometimes called the African Purple Swamphen, the African Swamphen has been split from the Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) following Garcia-R. and Trewick (2015). Each of the six previously recognized subspecies groups has been elevated to species rank: *Western Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio). *Black-backed Swamphen (Porphyrio indicus). *African Swamphen (Porphyrio madagascariensis). *Philippine Swamphen (Porphyrio pulverulentus). *Gray-headed Swamphen (Porphyrio poliocephalus). *Australasian Swamphen (Porphyrio melanotus). Of these, the African Swamphen has a distinctive bronze-green mantle and wing coverts as seen here, and a relatively small frontal shield. Reference: Juan C. Garcia-R., Steve A.
