Observation details
Continuing, first found by Mary Keleher. Access note: the gate hours at the state beach lot seem to fluctuate depending on the gatekeeper’s mood, so early/late visitors should park at Bayberry Lot (41.5552306, -70.5034039) and walk the trail that cuts to McGregor’s Rd. Very challenging conditions this afternoon with misting rain soaking all optics and clothes. The last observer had already left when Don and I arrived on site. A walker passed through and shuffled everything on the beach just as we started scanning. After 15 minutes I spotted the bird at (41.5536712, -70.4881160). A small group of us were able to watch it foraging with 3 other plover species until the mixed flock disappeared around the dune barriers. For the next hour I staked out the original area while another pair of birders investigated the easternmost part of the beach, but the fruitless search was made even more difficult by wind and rain. At precisely 16:21 the sand-plover and a single SEPL flew in from the west and landed at the west end of the dune barriers, puttered around for less than a minute, then again disappeared around the barriers and to the east. This was apparently the last sighting of the bird today.
