Observation details
Suspected nest (we reported a bird carrying food 15 August) confirmed. Entrance to nest burrow (photo attached) is behind a large dead fern 3m above the ground in a roadside bank. For a total of one hour (two sessions) watched bird(s) bringing food; this included lizards, insect pupae, a tree frog, caterpillars and wood larvae (see photos). Stiles and Skutch state (for Furnariidae) that both sexes nearly always take equal shares in rearing the young. Although only one adult bird was present at any one time the frequency of return (approx. every 10 minutes food was served) suggested that two adults were involved. If only one bird was feeding the young it was a remarkably fast and successful hunter.
