Observation details
Injured female that has summered here. Distinguished from greater scaup by bill and head proportions and wing stripe (crown shape is not particularly helpful at this time of year, as the birds are molting their head feathers). Viewed head-on, bill is wider than the jowel bulge and roughly the same width at the base and tip. Also from head-on view, head is narrow and does not angle outward toward the crown. Some whitish coloration of the wing stripe continues out to P6, but the bright white is confined to the secondaries. Photos.
