Observation details
We searched the lake for a breeding plumage Eared Grebe reported this morning. The bird was fairly distant and stayed in the middle of the lake, but we could easily discern that this was an Eared Grebe based on its shape and some pattern visible. This was a small bird with a short, dumpy and seemingly tailless body, slender neck, and head with an obvious crest that arose from the front of the crown and peaked mid-crown. This crest even appeared to be separated from the rear part of the crown. The bill was short and finely pointed. The sides of the face (ear covert area) showed a pale patch, but the bird was too far to see detail. The sides did show a dark chestnut color against the black back. The bird preened for some time, and as it rolled on its side, the white belly showed. It flapped its wings once and showed white on the inner secondaries but the forewing was dark.
