Observation details
I originally identified this as an American Pipit and wrote that I was "Shocked to see this species in NE Ohio second week of August. "Birds of the Cleveland Region" by Larry Rosche has September 4 as the earliest fall date for the seven county region, with data up to 2004. The earliest autumn Ebird report for this species in Portage County is the second week of October. This individual was foraging on shoreline mudflats with Least SP, Kildeer, and Semi-palmated SP." However, two Ebird reviewers thought it was a juvie Horned lark and so I changed the identification. A juvie Horned Larks is certainly much more likely at this date than an Am pipit and it may be possible to see the beginnings of a darkish collar on the bird's neck.
