Observation details
Went looking for Eared Grebe after this morning's find by D.K. Lessard. Found at distance and in poor light in center of north end of North Pond (about 3/4 way north in pond). See terrible pictures, but can see it's shape, tall crest (as seen in the better pictures from this morning), thin bill, and dark coloration. Through the scope it was a little more clear, with some lighter coloring on the face from the fan of facial feathers. There is a limited amount of roadside parking on Rte 137 where it runs along the eastern shore with no houses for a stretch, north of Smithfield village; this is a good vantage point for much of the northern part of the lake. It's also possible to launch a kayak/canoe here, if you don't mind hauling it down a bit of a steep bank. After seeing the grebe from shore with the scope, I went back to get my kayak, but by the time I got it in the water, the grebe was gone, presumably to another part of the pond. I paddled all of the north end, with no further sitings. Perhaps it didn't like the eagles perched on the northern island. It's a big pond, about 3 miles long by 1 mile wide. There's also a potential viewing spot further south in Smithfield Village, at the Grange Hall, but not sure about public access there.
