Observation details
Likely adults transitioning into nonbreeding plumage. First thought to be white rumped sandpiper from the chest streaking and black legs, but no side streaking like white rumped, and no tail band seen when flushed by a whimbrel. One individual had thicker streaking on the chest, smaller and much browner (now identified to be a least sandpiper by Brandon Woo). Partial dark eyestripe, black legs (the least sandpiper feeding amongst them had yellow legs), pale grey/brown back with no rufous feathers. Bill not as long as western and lacks slight decurved tip. Also was found inland, not usually typical for western, so deduced to be most likely semipalmated. Note images were taken from far away with harsh light, so I dropped the highlights to make the upperparts more visible.
