Media notes
Typical foraging behavior of the Lesser Black-backed Gulls that now stage on the ocean-facing shores of eastern Long Island, NY. Individuals patrol the swash zone picking up tiny fish or invertebrates exposed by the retreating waves. This is a relatively new phenomenon seen in just the past decade or so. Previously this species was less common and mainly fed offshore using the beach fronts to loaf (rest, bathe, and preen).
Observation details
30 on the water's edge at my arrival, the rest flying quickly from W to E presumably to favorite roost areas. Still coming through at the 1-hour mark, when I terminated the checklist to head home. A mix of ages, the majority in active molt and as such, some very ratty.
