Observation details
Further south in Maine there are 10-100 Common Terns for every Arctic Tern. On Machias Seal Island, the ratio is reversed. These birds look stockier in flight - short necks, smaller heads, and stout bills. The bills are also bright red verse the orange seen in Common Terns. Also note short legs, more upright posture, and rounder head. My favorite field mark is the lack of white between the cap and gape. We had to carry Tern Sticks pointed above our heads to stop the territorial birds from attacking us.
