Observation details
Lifer! 11th state record. Coming to hummingbird feeder at NW corner of yard. Moderate-sized first-summer male oriole with orange cast to yellow plumage all across head, body and tail. Black in on throat; upper mandible black and more contrasting with lower mandible than on Bullock's Oriole. Wings and back gray with one thin white wingbar. Bird had two calls: a familiar but "drier" oriole chatter, and a House Finch-like "wheet". Bullock's Oriole eliminated by extensiveness of black bib, thinness of white wingbar, black upper mandible, and more yellowy tone overall without the contrasting brown flank. Orchard Oriole eliminated by presence of orange cast to plumage, presence of only one white wingbar, "wheet" call, and probability based on date. Thanks, Nadine Drisseq! Glad we could catch this on Facebook in time. :) pics to come.
