Observation details
Lifer! I heard their calls first, then saw them flying in a fairly tight group. All I noted about their appearance was they were all green except for yellow on the wings, had long pointy tails, and were roughly mockingbird sized. Their calls were much higher-pitched than those of other psittacids I've heard before. I'm sure there are plenty of differences, but they reminded me of budgies chattering inside a PetSmart cage. This was my second of five stops on an insane whirlwind trip down to LA to see the bean-goose. I figured if I'm driving all this way (from the Bay Area), I should try to make the most of it and decided on several other targets to try for, most of which were exotics. It looks like I left the Sepulveda Basin a little too early to see the Northern Red Bishop over there, but I had better luck here. That said, with how regularly they are reported here I was expecting to find the parakeets roosting somewhere, but after walking through and around the entire park, I was pretty sure they were absent. I eventually started walking south on Hobart Ave to go look at a kingbird I could hear calling, and that's where this flock eventually flew over. As noted above, I heard them before I could see them, so I started recording, but then wasn't prepared to try to get a photo as they flew past. That's fine, though. I'm no good at flight photos anyway. Thanks to Joshua Miller for consistently reporting these birds here and enabling me to see what ended up being one of the two lifers I saw on this trip.
