Observation details
Lifer! I first heard a repeated, low, moaning "whooo" call (recording attached), and waited around in the area. After about 10 minutes, the owl flew out of the woods just below the treeline. It was pretty dark out, but the silhouette was clearly visible: relatively large head and long, rounded wings; much like the Short-eared Owl I observed back in Maryland, US in March. I heard it calling again later and saw it in flight twice more over the fields. I waited a few months to post this and kept the location vague for the owl's privacy.
