Observation details
By early afternoon of my 19th birding anniversary, it was 104 degrees Fahrenheit in Kingsville, Texas and felt like it was 120. After spending a mere ten minutes birding in the open, I took advantage of a small clump of trees to get some much-needed shade. To my surprise, I was not the only one trying to beat the heat. A Curve-billed Thrasher was perched in the same clump and was gular fluttering, or agitating its neck muscles with its beak open to cool down. Fortunately, it was too invested in this avian panting to pay me any attention, so I took my pictures and then took my leave.
