Observation details
While scoping a small flock of peeps and couple of Avocets on a small rocky island realized there was a larger sandpiper standing out among the least sandpipers. The bird had orange patches on its cheek, head and nape. Dark crown was separated by very apparent white supercilium that extended well past its eye. Underparts were heavily barred indicating alternate plumage. Long legs greenish/yellow in color. Both bill and tip of bill slightly drooped with the tip also being rounded. Size of bird difficult to tell as there were no other like-sized sandpipers to compare (I.e. dowitchers). Overall impression of body was that it was elongated. Occasional sewing-machine behavior. Believed to be first record for the San Bernardino Mountains.
