Observation details
continuing stakeout. This is an immature (2nd year?) based on the dark secondaries, banded tail and underwing mottling. The bird was primarily in the trees along the eastern edge of the fence line before perching atop a tree at 36.610452,-118.0636002. It would fly out, low over the field and catch dragonflies then bring it back to a perch to eat (I did not see it eat anything on the wing). Gray raptor that was quite falcon like. It was overall quite gray, with lightest gray to head and some white feathers scattered in chest and scapulars and perhaps some brownish feathering remaining on abdomen. Tail was short with some brownish banding and evidence of feather wear. Underside of wing mottled with white. The secondaries were black (should be white in an adult Mississippi Kite) and there was some rusty brown feathering within the primaries (but less than seen in Plumbeous Kite). photos
