Observation details
Small shearwater. Flew by and landed in water in front of us (!) as Captain N. Haigh and I were returning from shorebirding Tree Island. I instantly yelled “shearwater” as the bird flew by, it’s distinctive flight pattern visible immediately. Taking a photograph in the rolling waves was very difficult but I managed a few as it flew towards us and out of sight. White underwing and general black-and-white patterning. Small overall size, similar to Bonaparte’s Gull. Wowowowowow!
