NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 38. Bulk reel: 52. 203 tape. a) 9/XII/72. ~ 8:00 PM. Type A song ~ 10-15 minutes after much playback of field tape. Quality: 2-3. Level: +5. b)10/VI/71. 4:55 to 5:15 AM. Type B song, after whistled imitation of Type A. Quality: 2. Level: +5. 3 3/4ips. c) Natural song @ 6:35 PM (cloudy fair) of 10/XII in same places as other songs and presumably the same bird. Type A song - 3 3/4" - Quality: 2. Level: +5. Then more type B song after playback of the previous recording. Quality: 1. Level: +5. 3 3/4ips. Then more and voice notes re: the owl hawking insects from the air. Quality: 1. Level: +3. 3 3/4ips & 7.5ips. Notes re: O. watsonii cut 38. Cut 38) bird sings @ same rhythm but higher frequency than bird of Cut 37). Tried to determine presence of some Otus sp. by playing the Otus field tape. No apparent reaction to O. usta. Bird apparently reacted to O. watsonii Type B song (i.e., it apparently came in and was close, but silent), but I first became aware of its presence when it gave some sort bother [sic] sounds as soon as the second section of Type A song started. Then it started singing with O. watsonii Type B song, but before I could get ready to record it changed to Type A and had been singing this for some time in a very low voice before I started to record. (Note: I was in the area @ 6:30 PM, still light, and I heard no natural song at all as it became darker.) Playback trials: 1) Playing its own recorded song (which was very weak), the bird reacted but flew far to the other side, then started singing from there. 2) Then I played usta and bird reacted to that after a short while with "bother" calls, then a bit of Type B, similar to those I had first noticed, but for a much shorter time, then fell silent. Then after some delay I tried again with usta but there was apparently no reaction. I then tried watsonii Type A and there was apparently no reaction to that either; then with Type B, near the end I noticed some reaction similar to first time but much reduced. Next AM I arrived ~ 4:20 AM. No Otus song heard until finally one single Type B phrase ~ 4:00 AM. After this I whistled Type B and bird reacted with quick Type A song. Then I whistled Type A and bird reacted with Type B (recorded), bird right overhead. Note: @ 5:15 AM sky just beginning to lighten in east (there has been the light of the last 1/4 moon.). Sound stimulation was (other): playback other Otus spp..
