Observation details
1st Rutherford County record. I was trying to find and photograph yesterday's Dickcissel when I looked up and saw a duck flying my way. Without picking up my binoculars I immediately guessed Black-bellied Whistling-Duck based on the unique size, shape, and flight style, and as it got closer I saw the striking white markings on the upper wings. I snapped dozens of photos before it continued toward downtown. I would guess that this bird was coming from Gateway Island which is only about 1 mile down the road as the duck flies.
