Observation details
Female. This bird has been visiting the feeders for a few days now, but we haven’t had much time to examine it. The thought of a BCHUxANHU hybrid was already in our heads for this bird, and with the arrival of a more obvious male of the same hybrid combination at the feeders today, we strongly suspect this bird is the same hybrid. We’ll try to secure more photos in the near future. Bill almost identical to that of the hybrid male, short and fairly straight but with a slight curve to it. Wings extending to just above the tail. From the side, looks very reminiscent of a BCHU female with dark lores and giving the impression of having a long neck and small head. Head on, looks much more reminiscent of an ANHU with flecks of color on the gorget (the color has been hard to pinpoint in the light we’ve seen it in but will try to get photos that show it better). Gorget flecks along the lower border of the gorget and extending upwards in the center of the throat towards the bill. Welcome to more opinions on this strange bird. Digibins for now, better photos to come.
