Update 10/24/23: At the time of this sighting Cordilleran Flycatcher had not yet been re-lumped with Pacific-slope Flycatcher, but the AOS did just that only 5 days later! EBird made the change official here on the date of this update. Original notes: Lifer! I heard it calling and singing from a conifer almost all the way back down by my car as I was on my way out. It stayed for just a couple of minutes during which I wasn't able to spot it before flying away and down, out of sight. Both the calls and song sounded like Pac-slope but much lower pitched. Also the song tended to repeat the up-down part more often without the individual notes in between that I usually hear Pac-slopes stick to more diligently. Given that both the Rosy-finches and this bird were within 10 minutes of my car, you could almost suggest that from a listing perspective, I could have just stayed near where I parked and spared myself a nine-mile hike! Seriously, this was a really fun and beautiful outing, however I look at it. I've never had nearly as many or as good of looks at MacGillivray's Warblers (yet I somehow still missed the photo!), the wildflowers were gorgeous, and I enjoyed getting to meet and talk to a few other birders, hikers, and nature enthusiasts along the way. I'm never upset to hear a new bird, but I've also been anticipating for a while that this species won't exist at the species level anymore in the near future. If this does end up getting lumped, it'll be the first time I ever lose a lifer species due to taxonomic updates. The good news is I track subspecies as well, so it won't take that kind of tick away from me. In fact, assuming that does happen, this will become one of seven lifer subspecies on this checklist! What makes it slightly more interesting is this is also a milestone bird for me: 200th passerine. Even given that, I probably won't mind going back and rearranging notes if needed. I get a kick out of tracking all these completely unimportant details.
