Observation details
Lifer! Heard singing from around the creek on the far north side of the conservation center. It's "frreebeer" song was immediately recognizable and unmistakable. We stopped here with our guided bus tour that took us from Whittier to Anchorage, and I knew it was my last real chance to bird on this trip. I had done my best to memorize all this species vocalizations in hopes that even a little pip wouldn't go unnoticed, but as we walked around and saw all the animals, I wasn't hearing any flycatchers. It seemed like every enclosure had its own Savannah Sparrow or two, and the Orange-crowned Warblers were nearly as prevalent. We visited the porcupine and coyote, saw the deer, musk ox, elk, and caribou, checked out both bears, and were at the bison enclosure on the extreme northern end of the center when I finally heard it! Woohoo! It wasn't very close, but the river was calm enough and we were far away enough from all the other guests at the center that the song rang clear. "Free beer," you say, my flycatching friend? I hate to break it to you, but I don't drink. All the same, thanks for the offer, and here's to you!
