Observation details
*Rare breeder in Westchester. Formerly more widespread across the county and once quite plentiful here, ACFL has sharply decreased as a breeder in Westchester, and despite that the habitat here seems excellent, they rarely — if at all — return to Mianus in summer (a pattern that has tracked with many species that once bred at Mianus like Black-throated Green Warbler and Blue-headed Vireo that are now totally absent in summer). Continuing bird first found by David and Thomas Gillen on June 29, marking the first ACFL reported here since 2017. Found here: (41.17760° N, 73.61843° W), about 150ft up trail of Marker 5. Listening closely, I heard what sounded like a pit-SAH/pwit-SIP/piz-ZA and so I paused to listen again. Then, clear as day, this little guy erupted loudly, singing that infamous song and bringing a huge smile to my face. I never thought I’d get to experience ACFL in the county in this context — as a prospective breeder on territory— since I thought their glory days were in the past, so this will go down as among the more special encounters I’ve had in Westchester. The bird sang mightily in the depths of the gorge for the whole 15 minutes I just sat there. Truly unbelievable. Audio to come
