Photo by Luke DeCicco Alarmed Solitary Sandpiper in small Sitka spruce, with three weakly flying young in the immediate vicinity.
Observation details
An adult and three weakly flying young were seen together near the shore of Chiniak Lake, near Cape Chiniak. The adult was calling continuously from the top of a small Sitka spruce, while the juveniles were seeking shelter among grasses of the wet area around the tree. When we approached closer, the four birds flew off around the lagoon. We took this site to be very near the location of the nest because of the adult bird’s alarmed behavior, because the weakly flying juveniles were staying so close to the adult, and because the habitat looked suitable for nesting. LHD took photos of the adult and a juvenile. This is the second nesting record for the archipelago.
