Observation details
Continuing in various trees in the grassy slopes directly below the VA building and parking lot (37.7831752, -122.5080356) . This woodpecker was the same size and shape as an Acorn Woodpecker. It had an all white breast/abdomen (no streaking). The dorsal surface was mostly black, except for large white wing patches—which were very obvious posterior wing bars in flight—contiguous with the white rump. The head was red. It had the reddest head. You have never seen a head this read. They tell me it’s the reddist. That’s what they tell me. So they say.
