NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 6. Bulk reel: 18 a) 5:00 AM. During the course of the clear, moonlit night, starting about 3:00 AM, I heard a song that seemed to have a voice quality similar to that of this species but was entirely new to me. (For one such song see Nyctibiius grandis Cut 2e). Then early in the morning these songs became more frequent and I recorded some from closer to the source. The first is natural, the next two after playback and I was closser. The bird did not leave its perch, and there doesn't seem to be much difference in its song. Quality: 1. Level: +10. I finally saw the bird and found it to be this species and apparently fully adult. It just sat in a tree at the edge of a field and sang like this. b) 5:45 AM. No further playback since 5:00 AM. (In background is apparent Micrastur semitorquatus.) Quality: 1-2. Level: +10. c) 6:30 AM. Ditto. I've moved closer to bird. Quality: 1. Level: +5. Then after playback of this song; bird delayed a long while before singing (delay cut), although had turned around to face in my direction. Response to playback: Orient. Habitat: Field, Edge.
