Observation details
At long last :) After looking for these around Jayamangali for god knows how long, we finally ran into a small population while driving around an open grassy area on the edge of the reserve. First spotted a single bird doing a flight display (and assumed Tawny lark, the usual suspect) but the song structure seemed a bit peculiar for Tawny & reminded us more of the Singing Bushlarks we found around Mysore last year. Waited for it to finish displaying & spent some time looking for it in the tall grass till we finally flushed it and got good views of the white outer tail feathers & overall structure, confirming Singing Bushlark! After flushing it multiple times & failing to get good enough ID photos, we tried a little playback and three birds instantly began flying at us from different directions in response. Got very nice views of 1 or 2 of them singing from an exposed bund later, our best sighting of the species yet. What a fascinating bird!
